A devastating earthquake hit Kashmir on 8 October 2005. Art
of Living and the International Association for Human Values
(IAHV) immediately began providing emergency relief &
trauma relief programs
IAHV Child Care Shelters opened in Srinagar in Nov 2005 and
January 2006 to provide shelter, medical attention, nutritious
meals and education to 200 needy children. In March 2006 a
full- fledged school set up by us with local teachers began
functioning in hired premises. Exactly one year later, in
November 2006, in recognition of the high quality of our services
and our proven sustainability, the State Government of Jammu
& Kashmir have offered us a school building in Srinagar to
expand our services to cover 300 children.
Objective:
to create a community of well educated, happy, professionally
capable youth from amongst talented, financially deprived
children of rural backgrounds/urban poor, by setting up
a Beacon School which will set standards and provide a methodology
for high quality stress-free education for the entire state
of Jammu & Kashmir.
Target Group:
Deprived children from across the entire state will be personally
identified by us in collaboration with the state Education
Department. We will cover 3,000 children.
Methodology:
We intend to offer the finest education without stress in
a caring, residential environment; establish language laboratories
with modern teaching aids, new methodologies of teaching
science and maths, and conduct teacher-training programs
for the entire state.
Implementation Strategy:
to start a Beacon School to serve as a ROLE MODEL.
For this purpose a site of 5-7 acres has already been identified
only 12 km from the municipal limits of Srinagar, the state
capital.
Project Timeline:
the purchase of land and building of the campus can be completed
within one year covering primary and secondary wings, with
hostels.
